Snapshot

A snapshot is a point-in-time capture of an instance. With IDrive® Compute's snapshot feature, you can take a real-time image of an instance with all its contents, save it, and use it to restore the instance to a specific point in time and create a new instance.

You can take a live snapshot of a running instance. When you take a snapshot of a running instance, you can continue working on it while your snapshot is being taken in the background. A snapshot can also be captured when the instance is offline.

 

Create a Snapshot of an Instance

When you create a snapshot of a compute instance, a real-time copy of the instance with all its existing contents at that particular moment gets created and saved in your IDrive® Compute account. A snapshot can also be downloaded on your local computer for future use. 
Follow the steps to take a snapshot of an instance:

  1. Sign in to your IDrive® Compute account.
  2. Click the instance whose snapshot you want to take.
  3. Click Snapshot from the LHS menu.
  4. Enter a name for the snapshot.
  5. Click Take a live snapshot.

    The snapshot will be saved and displayed in the Snapshots page under Images.

Note: Snapshots will be charged additionally at $0.05/GB/month.

Create an Instance Using a Snapshot

You can use a snapshot to create a new instance. 
To create an instance using a snapshot:

  1. Sign in to your IDrive® Compute account.
  2. Go to the Images tab and click Snapshot.
  3. Click Actions against the snapshot which you want to use for creating an instance.
  4. Select Create an instance.

  5. Select a Region from the drop-down list.
  6. The snapshot that you are using to create the instance will be selected by default.
  7. Choose a plan. You can select shared or dedicated CPU and choose yearly or monthly billing.
  8. Select an authentication method for the instance. You can either set an SSH key or a root password for authentication.
    1. SSH-Keys - Select SSH Keys from the list of pre-added keys. To add a new key, click Add an SSH Key. Enter the key name and your existing SSH Public Key details, click Add Key.
    2. Password - A root password will be suggested by default. You may use the same password or create a new password.

  9. Enter User-Data in cloud-config format. It is optional.
  10. Add the required number of servers and server name under Finalize and Create.

  11. Activate the following add-ons as required by clicking the corresponding checkbox:
    a. Enable Instance Backup - By default, the option to enable daily cloud-based image backup for the instance is selected. Deselect the option if you do not want to enable backup.
    b.     Private IP - Select this option to get a private IP address for your instance.
  12. Click Create.

On successful creation of a new instance, a message will be displayed and the instance will be listed on the Instances page.

Snapshot Pricing

Snapshots are charged at $0.05/GB/month. The total charge for a snapshot will be based on the size of the snapshot.

There may be a minimum charge of $0.01 for each snapshot irrespective of its size and existence.
